Department of Arts and Sciences

We live in an integrated global world. It is a world where political and economic change, natural disasters and environmental issues influence different countries across national boundaries, cultures and values.

What we need to live in such a world are communication skills, the ability to promote mutual understanding and to facilitate communication from a confirmed cultural perspective, and the capacity to think flexibly taking a global view.

At the Department of Arts and Sciences, students study people and society as a cohesive cultural study to develop a comprehensive, fluid way of thinking, with the aim to foster generalists who can connect people together in the 21st century and connect people with society.

The Department of Arts and Sciences has a variety of 180 elective courses which study contemporary culture broadly and deeply.

These courses are composed from subject groups categorized as Intercultural Communication, and Social and Institutional, studying modern culture, society and social systems extensively. Additional subject groups categorized as History and Thought are preparation for a deep understanding of the origin and history of the basis and mindset of each of the cultures of the West, East and Japan and so forth.

So that students can freely choose to study from these broad groups of subjects, based on their interest in specific issues, seminars are open for four years from admission to graduation.

Academic seminars are interactive and students can follow their own research topics, developing the practical skills and expression necessary to author formal papers.
